Use caution when navigating these notorious trouble-spots at the Lake.

While a day on the Lake can be fun, there’s also the potential for mishaps. The unique layout of the Lake can sometimes spell trouble for captains, especially those who are unfamiliar with what lies beneath the surface. Every year, hidden hazards around the Lake cause issues for boaters as they encounter shallow spots, sunken logs and other submerged objects. Here are some of the more common places on the Lake where incidents occur, and tips for anyone operating watercraft approaching those areas.

The Hidden Island — Lodge of Four Seasons

Near the Lodge of Four Seasons there’s an underwater “ledge.” It’s visible as a tiny island of rock in the winter when the water level is low. But with the summer’s higher water level, those rocks slip out of sight… until it’s too late. In May 2023 a boat famously ran aground on this ledge and was abandoned. Travis Coleman, owner of Lake Tow LLC, explains: any boat traveling over this spot is essentially cruising over the top of a bluff. The area is marked by multiple buoys, so when approaching, boaters should reduce speeds and operate with caution.
